Double feature of FAIL

Last night, instead of sleeping, I decided to watch a double feature. First up was Dragonball Evolution. I can’t say enough bad things about this movie. It sucked more then I could have ever imagined. Stephen Chow and Chow Yun Fat both should be ashamed. Stephen Chow has lost it, after Shoalin Soccer and The God Of Cookery, it seems all down hill. For Chow Yun Fat it seems this fall from grace has been going on for much longer. Every frame of this film just makes me wonder why it was ever even made.

Next up, Dragonlance: The Dragons of Autumn Twighlight. I loved the trilogy when I was in my mid to late teens, and this film almost ruined it for me. The animation quality was horrible, and who ever had the idea of mixing crappy 2D animation with equally terribly bad 3D needs to get out of this business now. The 3D was used on the dragons and the draconions, thigh it looks like only 2 models were ever made, one for each, they didn’t even bother to hue shift let alone redo textures between the dragons,save one which they made default 128 grey. This film encompassed the entire first book, that is alot of action for just 90 minutes. Too bad it was all crap. For the most part the voice acting was pretty ok, except for Raistlin, voiced by Keifer Sutherland. The first time Raistlin cast a spell I almost spit my drink out. It sounded like: “Caramon is pissed go park his car” it was so bad, none of the other casting phrases sounded any better. This is the worst thing in my opinion they could have done for Dragonlance, hell even a kid with his friends LARPING the first book with his dad’s camcorder would have been a step up.

Star Trek: Spoiler free review

So I went and saw the new Star Trek movie on Thursday evening, and again Friday afternoon. Plain and simple, this is one of the best Trek movies yet.
As you may know, I feel that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is the best one in the series, till now. The new J.J. Abrams Star Trek is now sharing the #1 spot as far as I am concerned.
The casting is top notch, from the incidental characters, all the way up to the top 3. One of my favorites is Karl Urban’s protrayal of Dr. Leonard McCoy, aka Bones.
This was an amazing thrill ride, from start to finish, and the refreshing reboot the series needed!

Star Trek, can not wait!!!

A possible new springboard with categories for organizing our front end

Personally I would love the option to see some live data when I wake my phone but not unlocking it, like # of unread mail, appointments and what not in a user configurable system.

New Mac Pros, New iMac, New Mac Mini

Pretty cool stuff coming out of Apple as of late. I am going to go into some detail on what I think about the new machines, in case anyone is interested in some insight.

Mac Pro: Really nice to see Apple getting the new Nehalem Xeons before Intel even announced them as being released. Clock for clock the new Nehalem Xeons are anywhere from 20% to 60% faster then the previous Penryn Xeons. So just because the clock speed looks lower, it really doesn’t effect performance, the 2.26Ghz Nehalem is more like a 2.8Ghz Penryn, where as the 2.66Ghz Nehalem choice is basically a 3.2Ghz Penryn. For those who are richer then me can always go for the 2.93Ghz Nehalem and just be silly fast. The Nehalem also supports Turbo Boost which shuts off the idle cores while simultaneously increasing the speed of the active ones, up to 3.33GHz on a 2.93GHz Mac Pro. The memory is triple channel, though there are 8 slots, so there will be a downgrade of performance if you decide to fill all 8 slots, though the actualy real world performance drop still needs to be tested, which I am expecting www.barefeats.com to do at some time in the near future. The downside with the new Mac Pro in my opinion are the weak choices in video cards. The NVIDIA GT 120 is basically a rebadged NVIDIA 8800GS with a die shrink. This is not as good of a performer as the previous NVIDIA 8800GT in benchmarks I have seen. The high end choice is the ATI Radeon HD 4870, which was a decent card in the late summer of 2008, but I have issues with ATI as the card of choice. It makes one wonder if Apple is on the outs with NVIDIA or if ATI just went to bat with better pricing.

Safari 4 Beta

Safari 4 beta has been released. Going to give it a try, I expect it to be good. I particularly like the idea of Cover Flow for history and bookmarks as an option, as sometimes I can’t remember a site ( many of the Japanese ones I visit, but I remember them by the layout / visual design. )
